The teaser trailer for Adam Green's Hatchet is now online, and you can watch it right here.
The film, about some horny teens who run into a cuckoo nutso maniac deep in the heart of Louisiana swampland, is being touted (and is touting itself) as "old school American horror", a sort-of response to the glut of remakes (of both American and Asian descent) currently on offer. It's interesting that there's so much circle-jerking going on in Hollywood horror cinema right now that what appears to be a straight-up early-'80s style slasher flick seems like a fresh idea. By "interesting", I might mean "sad".
Hatchet will hit theatre screens on September 7.
Another terribly interesting point of interest is the shirt the dude on the left is wearing in this pic:
You New England-based hipsters out there might recognize the logo from Newbury Comics, a store that 1) sells more CDs than comics, and 2) can boast your very own Final Girl as an ex-employee. As Newbury Comics gets a shout-out, I suppose I'm pre-disposed to liking Hatchet. In fact, it's almost as if I made the movie myself, isn't it? I think we can all agree that it's totally just like that.
Looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteI predict a 6/10, hehe, for the stupidness factors CAN equal good things.
I don't know, Stacie. If you made the flick, faces would be rocked off.
ReplyDeleteAnd, damn, I blew my hatchet story yesterday. Premature raconteurlation. Ah well.
I've seen this flick. It made the film festival rounds about a year ago (maybe two years ago) and I caught it as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. It wasn't bad. The victim pool is actually a group of tourist who have signed up for a "haunted swamp" tour. They get stranded and are forced to face off against one of the swamp's more aggressive and deadly myths. Victims include one of the B-list Murray brothers and the dude who ends up in a wheelchair in "Office Space."
ReplyDeleteThe cast is sufficient to their jobs, the gore is plentiful, we get some T & A (an element neo-slashers have avoided), and we get cameos from some famous horror icons.
Not a bad flick, but I don't think it'll knock anybody's socks on their ass.
Gee...those screaming expressions look so...natural. No doubt terrific actors. Ahem. The genre WISHES it was like it was in the 80s!
ReplyDeleteAs for the recent rash (a very appropriate term - it's a very nasty rash that won't go away) of '80s remakes - as we all know, the nostalgia cycle kicks in every 20 years. So it seems that Hollywood is right on track.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sure I'll see this...I like the fact that it's not pretending to be anything it isn't. Though you're right, Rhys- this picture works best if you imagine some Three Stooges -style "homina homina homina!" to accompany it.
ReplyDeletecrwm, you raise a good point about the T&A...while on-screen violence seems to get more and more explicit and realistic, the boobage has fallen by the wayside. Interesting. I wonder why that is.
Bill- you're totally right- faces would be rocked off into the stratosphere! :D
I thought I recognized that logo. In an alternate universe I used to buy comics there.
ReplyDeleteCoolage abounds in your past.
I now want to see the movie to see if they gave the kid with the New England shirt a New England accent.
"This haunted swamp is wicked killah!"
ReplyDeleteMy past? MY PAST??! Coolage more than abounds in my present as well.
What? It does.
No, really, I swear.
Mega-coolage.
Rita Coolidge, even.
Wait, that's not cool...dammit!
Looks lika a lot of fun, but then again many new slashers do. until you watch them.
ReplyDeleteBut I´ll keep my eyes open for this one!
I used to have that t-shirt....
ReplyDelete"for a wicked good time..."
I saw the trailer for this on the DVD for Spiral the movie Adam Green co-directed after Hatchet, but another trailer on that DVD really caught my attention: for a movie call Wrestlemaniac. It looked hilarious! Take you old school slasher concept and turn the villain into a cuckoo nutso luchador who can only be defeated within the rules of Luche libre and you've got wacky fun. Haven't seen the film yet but wondered if you have.
