Now that The Burning has come and gone, it's time for me to put on my choosing cap and pick another Film Club selection. Unfortunately, there's no sequel to The Burning (if there were, I'd hope it would be titled The Burning 2: The Reburnening), so I'm going to have to name a Cropsy-less film. It just so happens that a movie I've been dying to see- dying, I tells ya!- has finally been released on DVD. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...
Eyes of a Stranger! The DVD box art, of course, is completely different than the original (and awesome) movie poster art, but the tag line is the same. This 1981 slasher flick has long eluded my grasp, but no more! I'm so super-psyched- I mean, The Love Boat's Lauren Tewes starring as that beloved horror staple, an anchorwoman in peril? Jennifer Jason Leigh (in her first big-screen role) starring as her deaf, dumb, and blind sister? Effects by Tom Savini? 1981? How can we lose?
Well, it might suck. But at least we'll all be in it together, my Film Club Coolies! Speaking of Film Club Coolies, I'm implementing a new rule with this next installment: if you want your review to be linked here, your review must, in turn, provide a link to Final Girl. I don't care how it goes down: "This is my review for the Final Girl Film Club..." or "The character of Elizabeth reminded me of Final Girl because she was so smart and pretty..." or "The character of Hagatha reminded me of Final Girl because she was irritating..."; anything will do, but you gots ta link to me. We'll form a big cyber-circle of love and horror.
So! Eyes of a Stranger. I've provided the Netflix link for you, but beyond that, you're on your own. Let's rock it with Lauren Tewes!
The film: Eyes of a Stranger
The due date: Monday, November 5
Been a long time reader of your site, but this is the first time I've had reason to comment.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to pick up this new disc of EYES OF A STRANGER and write about it myself, so I think this provides ample opportunity to do so. If you can believe it, I'm a big fan of the director Ken Wiederhorn (recently tracked down his episodes for the "Freddy's Nightmares" anthology series).
Anyway, count me in!
Hmmm. I'd assumed any "The Burning" sequel would be called "The Burning 2: Afterburner"?
ReplyDeleteI have to get back on track! I've missed the last 2 film club movies! I will try my best to get myself back among the coolies!
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard, Aaron!
ReplyDeleteAnd you, dreamrot, I was starting to think it was something I said, or maybe my hair that was keeping you away! Welcome back! :P
Alternate title for The Burning II:
ReplyDelete"Still Burning: Overdone"
I can't believe they ditched the phone-booth stuffed with Styrofoam popcorn! UGH!
ReplyDeleteEyes of a Stranger is just about the best Anchorwoman In Peril movie there is... and certainly the bloodiest!
ReplyDeleteAck! This movie (rather, my lack of familiarity with this movie) cost me the crown in Buzz's "I Still Know" challenge at Camp Blood.
ReplyDelete(I miss that dude. Last I heard, Buzz was in the grips of some nefarious Quaker-cult over at AfterElton.com)
Yikes, I feel like a jerk! I totally didn't have a link in my film club post (fixed now). I could make up an excuse but I'll just be honest. An alien hacked into my computer and accidentally posted the wrong draft.
ReplyDeleteWow, "Eyes of a Stranger" is on the long wait list on Netflix. I can only assume that this is due to what we shall call "The Final Girl Effect." You must only use this power for good Stacie...or for personal gain.
November 5th??!?!?
ReplyDeleteI barely got The Burning watched in time to make the deadline to comment with all the other cool kids. If a short time isn't bad enough, THEN you have to give the direct link to Netflix. It's already a "long wait" thanks to people like me. Stupid other people wanting to watch it now when I need to watch it...
Don't make me walk to a video store. I'll do if forced but I'll be mumbling mean things under my breath the entire time...
I had thought this movie was just a crappy remake of an old French Movie....
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for this one, Jennifer Jason leigh acting circles around Lauren Tewes- what could be better?
ReplyDeleteHey! I didn't even know this was the film up for review and I just reviewed it recently at my site! I also, WITHOUT PROMPTING, linked back to you as the authority on slasher flicks of the '70s and '80s! How freakin' cool is that?!?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I participated in this thing without even meaning to, and for some reason, that makes me feel good.
Looking forward to reading everyone else's take on the film.
