I used to like Jaws: The Revenge when I was younger. I remember it was on TV a lot and I really dug it...and then I watched it recently and decided I shouldn't have pushed the issue, and should have left it as a wonderful memory.
I loved it when I was a kid too. I tried to watch it again recently as well and Mario Van Peebles' "Ahhh'm Ji-may-kaaaahn, Maaaaahn" accent almost caused a seizure.
Also, Michael Caine's character was named Hoagie! Wasn't this the movie he was stuck filming and couldn't get away to accept his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Hannah and Her Sisters? Ha!
And I loved that Nintendo game for it where you went around gathering conch shells until bleep-bleep-bleep OHMYGODTHESHARKISEATINGME. Good times.
Stacie, you ANSWERED MY PRAYERS! "Cider House Rules" my ass-- THESE are Michael Caine's greatest masterpieces. Let's hear it for "The Swarm," the greatest bad disaster movie ever! And "Jaws: The Revenge" ("Sharks come and go, Ellen.")Oh yeah, and "Dressed To Kill," his actaul GOOD movie that I liked. I enjoy knowing that there is someone else out there that appreciates nutty Michael Caine as much as I do.
(P.S.-- Everyone must see "The Swarm." Your life will be complete once you see Michael Caine carrying Henry Fonda. I know mine is.)
I don't know which is more hilarious, the fact that Michael Caine's character was named after a sandwich, the fact that he was in so many movies titled "The (X)", or the fact that the poster for Dressed to Kill actually says "Brian DePalma, Master of the Macabre"......
My dad took us to see THE ISLAND and then I used to reanact the mayhem with my star wars figures! I have not seen it in years! This is why I live for movie poster fridays!
Cool! I was just about to start looking up Michael Caine movies to watch after the commentary track on "The Hand" said he is known for several horror movies. I had never heard of any of these.
JA: Oh, we have GOT to talk NES games. :) I had that one and I played it all the time. I still have it as a ROM.
Jaws never bothered me so much as those damned diagonally-swimming jellyfish. Especially in the shallow water. With Jaws, you can just swim all the way to the top of the water line and he'll pass right through you.
I've never been able to stab that bastard with the boat, though. :(
BONUS GOING-TO-HELL MODE: Pretend your diver is Steve Irwin and cackle hysterically every time a stingray hits you.
The Swarm rocks, but there is too much to list why. Certainly Mr. Caine helps make it the classic that it is, but I never forget the wonderful exchanges between Michael and Richard Widmark. I swear they're in a shouting competition.
And for the record, when Michael Caine crashes the plane in the water, and then climbs onto the boat with a dry shirt makes it awesome!
You have to admire the ending of "Jaws: The Revenge," basically the director saying "Hey, it would be pretty hard to film a 25 foot shark jumping out of the water and getting speared by a ship, so I figured I would just show a few fragments of it and let the audience fill in the blanks themselves."
Man! Sometimes Micheal Caine just loves to get a check eh? Jaws IV, The Swarm, On Deadly Ground, The Hand..yet i've always enjoyed these great pieces of cinematic cheese...
Aw. I liked Jaws: The Revenge. I'm starting to think I might be the only one.
ReplyDeleteI think Amanda by Night dug it. She's a shark nut!

OMG have you heard of this movie called Teeth? It's about a woman with a vagina dentata. The tag line is "Every rose has its thorns": :D

ReplyDeleteWhat I can't believe is they somehow convince him to play major roles in remakes of movies he was already in. That still blows my mind.
ReplyDeleteNever even seen Jaws: The Revenge. I'm totally hunting it down and checking it out soon though. Ha!!
ReplyDeleteAnd after you do, check out the late Richard Jeni riffing on it.
ReplyDeleteOh, Richard Jeni was soooo funny. Such a shame that he left us so soon. I remeber this bit, and laugh hard every time I see it.
