I was intending to do a 'posters from some of my favorite movies' edition, but when I came across 7 different posters for The Descent, I decided it should probably have its own special day. So there.
Here's another one, and it makes me cackle with laughter. How freaking bored does Sarah look? She looks like she's daydreaming while getting shampooed. It's reminiscent of that Hills Have Eyes poster you hated, Stacie.
I don't get why none of the artwork took real advantage of that amazing shot towards the end of the film with Sarah climbing up that diagonal of bones towards the light. That was a fantasic image that would've lent itself to a nice poster.
The third one is my favorite. I remember seeing it in all the subway stations when I was visiting NYC around the time it came out. If I remember correctly, it's a recreation of a Dali piece?
Oh, and the Dalí picture you're thinking of was actually by a guy named Phillipe Halsmann, "in collaboration with" Dalí. Here are the two side-by-side. And I gotta admit, the Halsmann-Dalí skull is really good.
God, that skull poster is one of my all-time favorites. I gotta have that hanging on my wall. Although I also just love the design of the 7th one. Great use of negative space.
Boy, I feel low-rent right now. I was reading the comments and all like "wow, awesome, all right, someone else thought the third poster was the best! ... what? Because it's an homage to a work by surrealist legend Salvador Dali? ... oh. I just like it because it showed off two nice female bottoms in tight hiking shorts."
This film is one the few that really really scared me. I was watching the last couple of minutes with no sound. That has never happened with any other film.
Ha ha ha... The slogans for the German poster are certainly kind of cool (thank you, Bill Walsh), but NOT knowing what the German means, they read kind of funny to me. Especially the first one, it sounds like some made up name for a German doctor in some comedy or something: Dr. Angst von Dunkelheit!
The Descent is the ONLY horror film I have ever appreciated. Admittedly I don't watch a lot, because most sound the same, but still. What I hate about horror is the pointless gore that isn't scary but is instead just kind of... gross. The Descent is awesome in that the only gore is kind of necessary, and it terrifies the crap out of me just by messing with my mind. I watched this movie with a bunch of macho guys and three of them squealed at the appearance of the first crawler. The fact that the girls aren't moronic insipid blondes really earns this film some love from me =P
I love 3 and a different version of 6 the best. The different version of 6 is here, if you want a look. http://www.horrorexpress.com/images/descent_wallpaper2_group.jpg For 3, if you look, you can actually see bits of stills from the movie in the background. There's Sarah in the bottom left, for example.
2 and 7 are completely awesome as well, both well above the average for poster. In 7, the rock looks like a giant crawler head.
1 is meh, I like the damaged, faded look on 4 but otherwise there's nothing special, 5 looks strange and very vaginal, and 7 is completely random and pretty crappy design, although the randomly groping hands is kind of freaking me out.
Sorry if I'm freaking y'all out by now. I'm just very anal when it comes to TV and movies. Or their posters.

ReplyDeleteJA, thanks- I had to add that one to the bunch. I can't believe there was yet another poster for this film...not that I'm complaining.
ReplyDeleteIt's completely reminiscent of the Hills poster. It's a great moment in the film, but it translates to a decidedly ennui-flavored poster image.
You're right, Sarah, that poster is Dali-inspired, much like the Silence of the Lambs poster.
Well, no hablo Korean or Japanese, but the German slogans are:
ReplyDelete"Afraid of the dark?"
and
"Chasm of Horror"

ReplyDeleteI like poster No7 best.
Nice. I'd say 'the Descent' is the best horror film of the millennium, so far.
ReplyDeleteThe skull campaign is so great, I can't beleive they actually approved it for the American release. Oh, and eerie paintings, Stacie! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that first one before. Good sh*t. I wouldn't mind having that hanging on my wall.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha...
