There's no snarky commentary to accompany these beauts.
Okay, the fourth 20 Million Miles to Earth poster kind of looks like the monster is peeing. But that's it!
Clearly I need some CotT.
edit: oh, and there'll be more Harryhausen goodness next week!
No Valley of Gwangi?
ReplyDeleteOMG... this is a great MPF! For a sec I thought Godzilla was peeing in that 20 Miles To Earth poster.
ReplyDeleteNice new sidebars too. I feel like you've painted the place or something.
dreamrot: I just edited the post...I fully intend to do another Harryhausen edition, if not a couple more. There's a lot of awesome out there!
ReplyDeleteThanks, fox- it's good to get new drapes every once in a while. Glad you like 'em.
From the Unsolicited Translations File:
ReplyDeleteMost of 'em are pretty obvious. The crazy one is the Turkish one, which has at the top the French command, "Tremble before the power of the gods!" Why there's French on a Turkish poster, I dunno, unless they adapted a French poster and just left that there.
The title seems is something like The Final Commander—The Gate of Hell.
So there you go.
I LOVE RAY HARRYHAUSEN.
ReplyDeletenot in a gay way, but in a "i wish he had been my uncle, and he could've taken me to the movies every sunday then bought be a snow-cone" kind of way.
slightly OT: I still say the way to go for any Wonder Woman movie is to ditch all the normal trappings for a superhero movie, and make it like a modern day Harryhausen film--have her fight Medusa, the Hydra, a minotaur, etc--really Wrath of the Gods type stuff!
Fantastic! And I love that the German and UK versions of Clash of the Titans make the sword look utterly and ridiculously phallic-- coming out into the foreground like that. Plus, the tagline in those versions of the poster--"a new dimension of adventure"--make me wonder what the films would have been like in 3D. Can you imagine the brilliance?
ReplyDeleteOh my god, it really DOES look like it's peeing!
ReplyDeleteIts impossible to take that poster seriously anymore.
Dynamation!
ReplyDeleteSo, 20 million miles translates to 30 million km?
ReplyDeleteI hereby solicit a standing order for your translations, Bill!
ReplyDeleteI was SO lucky to get to see The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad at our local old theater (Cinema Treasure #4559) on a big screen - one of four remaining in the U.S. :( It's the only film that wasn't a current release that I got to see there. I often think about whoever it was that decided to screen it there - thanks, whoever you were, what a treat! :)
Aw, thanks, Mary! I'll try and live up to your mandate, lest you torch me like a dirty Protestant.
ReplyDeleteStacie, until you post a new blog entry it's still September here!
ReplyDeleteI love old scifi and movie posters. They are so evocative, and pack so much storytelling into so few images. Often the stories they evoke are better than the movies themselves - though not in the case of Harryhausen, whose creations are so full of character. Great posters!
