I'd be pleased if we could get a nice omnibus edition of the earlier games for one of the next-gen systems, or maybe just a downloadable option. For some of that old-school horror-gaming, y'know?
I really liked this movie quite a lot and I think it holds up pretty well on multiple viewings as well.
Is it because of the source matieral? If it hadn't been a videogame first would it be judged any more harshly than say THE BEYOND?
Also: I would have loved a sequel myself, it could have been Pyramid Head's HELLRAISER II (a good thing and a bad thing I suppose)
Also: I would like to propose a 2 year moratorium on creepy kids in horror films. Let's give other genre trops a try. How about zombie lunch ladies or demonicly possessed Shamwows?

Yes it would and quite rightly so. I have to admit that it definitely had its moments, but that just made the overall experience worse for me - nothing's more frustrating than a potentially great movie ruined by uneven execution and a weak script.
My sister-in-law grew up in the creepy looking town that they filmed this movie in and she said for a lot of the exterior stuff, they didn't need to do a lot because the town is just that ugly.
They really should let you write the sequel. Failing that, they should let anyone other than the guy who wrote the first one write it. The film had plenty of great moments, but they were all visual. As soon as someone opened their mouth or took any action the atmosphere was shredded.
zombo's closet of horror has a great review of silent hill, written as a letter to roger ebert. i love silent hill, but i'll be damned if that plot makes any sense at all. of course, the plots of the games weren't exactly easy to follow either.
Agreed. Carol Spier is the bee's knees in my book.
Considering that Silent Hill is a horror film AND a video game adaption it didn't exactly suffer from high expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to see it.
Preferred the lead up to that scene where she descends the stairs with the siren going off more than the crazy CGI babies, but the sounds effects where pretty effing creepy.
I liked that movie. Not the best thing ever made, but man did it have a great look and a creepy atmosphere.

ReplyDeleteThey should have dropped the "real world" part.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of Christophe Gans, the dude who directed Silent Hill, so I was expecting a bit more from it than I actually got.
ReplyDeleteBut I have to agree...it had it's moments. I just wish there were more of them.
I for one have always wanted to see a Silent Hill 2 adaptation where they expand the story beyond James Sunderland.
ReplyDeleteSort of Solaris meets Silent Hill.

It's been a while since there's been an Evil Cats movie...

I think I'm one of a very few who actually loved the movie, it's not perfect but it all just kinda works for me.
ReplyDeleteI think the one thing I would fix is to add more Pyramid Head
The production design is by one of Cronenberg's regulars: Carol Spier. So, of course, the look is fantastically creepy.

Just one thing from me. Creepy radiation children!!! Pyramid head!!!
ReplyDeleteThese make it all worthwhile. Though i will agree that the real world people were rubbish.
