awesome movie poster friday - the MORE CRAP I BOUGHT ON VHS edition!

Man, I tells ya. My friend Eric runs Spudic's Movie Empire and it's a VHS lovers paradise! I can't resist his $1 sales- I walk out with a boxful everytime. If you live in the Los Angeles area and you love BROWSING- and let's face it, only jerks don't love browsing- you owe yourself a trip. He does mail order too, so you have no excuses. NONE I SAY.

AnyIhavetoomanymovies, you can see that on my last trip I got a fucking great haul. Monsters ahoy! My favorite poster is the first one, the Deep Rising poster that calls the special effects team the "Special Effects Team". Why the quotes? Does that mean the FX were done by, like, the director's mom and her quilting club? 'Cause if that's the case, now I wanna see it even more!

  1. Oh man. Deep Rising is so bad that I recognized it as bad as a 13 year old seeing it at the dollar theater.

Also, why is it so danged hard to get a copy of Razorback?

  2. I'm so excited to watch it, although I don't know why. Maybe it's the whole jet ski flying away from explosion plus there are monsters thing. I'd always heard that it was a bit of a hidden gem...

...or maybe I just dreamed that. Time will tell!

  3. Oh Razorback... Our Aussie icon was just not quite so enjoyable on the recent return visit, far more scarier when I was but a lad.

And 'Q', what a trailer! The funniest serious trailer by far, 'Q'.

    Sorry, had to be said.

  4. Dead and Buried is great. Q and Humanoids from the Deep are crap, but fun crap. The rest are indeed mondo crapola.

  5. I gotta tell ya, my love for Deep Rising is unmatched in the sea monster movie genre. The cast is truly outstanding. Treat Williams in full hero mode, Famke Janssen in red dress hottie mode, Anthony Heald ("The Ottoia are very crafty." - a line I repeat just about every week) and Kevin J. O'Connor as the comedy relief.

But it is the mercenaries that really shine. Wes Studi, Jason Flemying, Cliff Curtis, Trevor Goddard AND Djimon Hounsou all chewing up scenery in the same movie?!?

Yes, Stacie Ponder, there IS a Santa Claus. And in 1999 he brought us Deep Rising.

You HAVE to see this movie.

  6. Yay, Humanoids From the Deep!

The poster art for the "Monster" version is by my friend, painter Bob Larkin--the man who gave us (among many other fantastic covers and posters) the cover painting for Marvel's Dazzler #1 and the poster for Piranha 2!

  7. I'm with B.E. Love Deep Rising. I really like how the Humonoids posters make no pretense about it. This is about monsters that kill men and sexually assault women.

Razorback is surprisingly easy to get, by the way...I ordered it from WB online, it's part of their archives series...and it's in anamorphic widescreen.

  8. Somewhat off-topic, and yet not: when I got my all-region DVD player, the FIRST thing I picked up was the Region 2 RAZORBACK DVD. Scary, perhaps not, but made in high style and gorgeous to watch.

That Spanish DEEP RISING poster freaks me the hell out.

  9. As much as I love the Sommersverse, "Deep Rising" was one I could've done without.

  10. There's a US one-sheet of Deep Rising with the marvelous adline, "Women and children first. You're next."

  11. Wait. Deep Rising ISN'T the one with Thomas Jane?? What's the sea monster movie with Thomas Jane? I'm so terribly confused.

  12. Thomas Jane was in Deep Blue Sea. About genetically altered tiger sharks. And it included Sam Jackson's best ever death scene.

  13. For absolutely no reason, I was JUST thinking about Phantom Of The Mall TODAY... for the first time in, like, decades...? Weirdness...

  15. That's freaky, I bought He Knows You're Alone last week! **attempts psychic connection with Stacie**

  16. I'm also down with the Deep Rising love... sure, it's goofy as hell, but it's something I revisit every now and then. Stephen Sommers before he hit the Peter Principle.

Some great moments (like "The Girl From Ipanema" bit), and it does deliver with the slime.

  17. Love Deep Rising. You must watch it, now.

And that Q teaser poster is absolutely gorgeous!!

  18. DEEP RISING is one of the ultimate modern hipsters favourites.

The movie suck ass in every conceivable way. Yet hipster horror fans have been trying to convince us for years that it's some kind of camp classic.

No, it's a shitty monster movie and nothing else.

  19. Deep Rising is one of those popcorn films that try to mix in humor with gross death scenes. But the ending with 'Monster Island' proved it was a popcorn flick you can enjoy late at night.

I've noticed that painted posters have much better composition than today's photographic cut and paste. What a shame. I hope "Breaking the Girl" uses more artistic poster designs.

  20. MaxTheSilent - I wouldn't ever describe myself as a hipster horror fan. I just like monster movies - and when Deep Rising came out, there weren't exactly a lot around. I enjoyed it, it was great fun.

    Ho hum.

  21. Deep Rising is the exact type of monster film hipster horror fans hate. It's a goofy, fun monster flick. No more, no less.

  22. Deep Rising is one of my absolute faves. Very funny, very hip. Never a boring moment.
