FINAL GIRL explores the slasher flicks of the '70s and '80s...and all the other horror movies I feel like talking about, too. This is life on the EDGE, so beware yon spoilers!
This movie isn't nearly as bad as some people think, IMO. Yes, it pales in comparison to the two films before it, but most sci-fi dreck also pales in comparison to this well-made film. And, besides, it's almost impossible for movie to be truly bad is if it has Pete Postelthwaite.
Honestly I like this movie, and find it rather interesting. It frustrates me that from the outset they off everyone but Ripley, as I think it undoes the development of Aliens. But the fact is, it's an excellent cast (Postlewaite, Charles Dutton, Charles Dance, Paul McGann) with a strong director (on his first movie, but even butchered by the studio, he had a unique style). All in all, I still find this one watchable.
Dude, this is a David Fincher production, and it feels like it all the way through. It's awesome. In fact, for me, it almost beats out Aliens because I always want to murder that little shit Newt. I take serious offense to this need to domesticize Ellen Ripley. What? People couldn't take it that they she was totally kick-ass and needed nothing traditionally feminine? Gawd, that makes my blood boil.
And that's Ric Olie in the background. God help me, my brain needs defragged or something. That info is totally useless in the real world. Or any other.
If I had to pick I'd take this over Aliens as well... the whole setup just feels that bit less familiar and predictable. It never did bug me that they offed the kid and the soldier before the opening credits... that just reminds us that the Alien universe is cruel and uncaring.
Many Alien fans seem to rank this over Aliens, based on what I could tell from the brief time I spent on the AlienExperience.com forums, possibly because Aliens is an action flick more than anything else and this one is closer to the horror-ness of the first film. Apparently there's a workprint version on DVD that is *the* version to see since there's no director's cut from Fincher as of yet.
The 'directors cut' (included in the Quadrilogy release, and the single film releases from that box) is far superior to the original cut, and is in fact my fave of the three films. This coming from someone who hated the original theatrical version.
