Here we go, y'all- we begin the reveal of your Top 20 Favorites as determined by your lists of Top 20 Favorites. WEIRD, huh? I know. You're excited to find out what's what, but it's also bittersweet. I get it and I'm right there with you. We must soldier on, however, and see this journey to its end- so dry your eyes, pull up your pants, and dive into the Top 20!
I'm sure you know this by now, but the bold number is the number of votes the film received.
20. Carrie -- 1976, Brian De Palma -- 44
19. Black Christmas -- 1974, Bob Clark -- 46
18. Return of the Living Dead -- 1985, Dan O'Bannon -- 46
17. An American Werewolf in London -- 1981, John Landis -- 47
16. Scream -- 1996, Wes Craven -- 50
15. Evil Dead 2 -- 1987, Sam Raimi -- 52
14. Jaws -- 1975, Steven Spielberg -- 52
13. The Evil Dead -- 1981, Sam Raimi -- 64
12. Alien -- 1979, Ridley Scott -- 64
11. Psycho -- 1960, Alfred Hitchcock -- 64
- When rattling off my favorite horror movies,I rarely, if ever, mention Carrie...but damn it's a good movie. Sissy Spacek is just absolute perfection. Gahh, I suddenly want to watch this movie so very much!
- Odd how The Evil Dead and its sequel landed so close to one another. ODD I SAY.
EDITED TO ADD: Earlier today I had A Nightmare on Elm Street listed at #16. That was just me being a jerk. #16, with 50 votes, is Scream. DON'T HURT ME!
That's a lot of votes for Jaws a film many people don't even consider a horror film. Jaws 2 seems more like a horror film what with Bruce the Shark II channeling Jason Voorhees.
ReplyDeleteI think many people DO consider it a horror film, between this list and a few special guest lists, all those "scariest moments" shows and the such. Alien seems like more of a contentious choice than Jaws.
ReplyDeleteI really thought Jaws, Alien, Psycho, and Evil Dead would definitely make the Top 19, What else is left? I can think of 3 more that haven't been mentioned yet. Those are pretty much shoo-ins. But what else?
ReplyDeleteAnd which movie made it to #1? Gnaw: Food of the Gods Part 2?! As long as the lil kiddies didn't stuff the ballot box with Rob Zombie's H2, I'm happy. Damn kids!
#1 is the remake for The Fog.
ReplyDeleteDamn! I should've said spoiler alert...
Jaws is an utterly perfect movie, one of my favorites of all time, and I'm glad it ranked as high as it did, but I couldn't vote for it myself, because I've never thought of it as a horror movie.
ReplyDeleteFive more of mine here: An American Werewolf in London, Scream, Evil Dead II, Alien, and Psycho. That means, if I haven't screwed up my math, that I have 8 of the top 10 on my list. I wonder what the other two are.
But Evil Dead 2 is better because I saw it first!
ReplyDeleteJaws not a horror movie? That's utterly insane. Not that this bit of information makes it a horror movie, but Jaws is one of the very few movies out there that actually kills a child. If that ain't horror I don't know what is.
ReplyDeleteSpielberg should seriously revisit the horror genre.
It does seem like people's favorite Evil Dead is always the first one they saw. I'm just glad I watched Evil Dead 2 first, since it's clearly the best one.
ReplyDeleteI thought War of the Worlds was a return to horror for Spielberg. I know for a lot of people aliens = scifi. But I think adding lots of death and scariness to the equation tips things over to horror.
ReplyDeleteSo what's left?
ReplyDeleteNight of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
The Exorcist
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Halloween
The Thing
The Shining

Verification word: Menzy. A very masculine frenzy.

I’m surprised that Jaws isn’t higher, frankly. For a movie that could have, hell, SHOULD have been a throw-away bit of summer fun, it’s truly amazing that it ended up being such a fine film. It can go toe-to-toe with the “best of all time” (yeah, I’m looking at you, Citizen Kane) and give ‘em a run for their money. It features wonderful acting and some of the best directorial decisions ever made.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a horror film, an action flick, a romance (not to mention a bromance), a comedy, a drama, a war movie, an epic, a mystery, a thriller, a fantasy, and even a musical. By gum, throw some horses in there and you’ve got a western. And all this from a (begging your pardon, Mr. Benchley) mediocre book as source material.
Dear sweet baby Jesus, I do love this movie.
I must interject. JAWS is most certainly a horror film. In fact it even follows the formula of a Slasher film if you think about.
ReplyDeleteAlien is in much the same vein as it is often referred to as Jaws in space. Also Kindertrauma did a fantastic post http://www.kindertrauma.com/?p=12315
that should be able to away your mind...!
