yessssss!

You guys, I'm super pumped about this next Film Club choice. I had no idea this movie was on Netflix, never mind on Netflix instant watch! OF COURSE I'm talking about the 1978 made-for-TV movie The Initiation of Sarah, which combines so many of my favorite things in the whole wide world: the post-Carrie world where young women had telekinetic powers, that mid 70s-early 80s trend where movie titles were frequently The Something of Someone, and a cast to end all casts! I mean, come on:
  • Shelley Winters
  • Kay Lenz
  • Robert Hays
  • MORGAN BRITTANY
  • Tisa Farrow
  • MORGAN EFFING FAIRCHILD
People, I am so all over this, I can't wait. Oh, The Initiation of Sarah. You had me at "the"!

The movie: The Initiation of Sarah (the 1978 version, not the remake!)
The due date: Monday, November 29 (that's right, two Film Clubs this month because I cannot waaaaait)
What you do:
  1. Review the movie on your site. Add a link to Final Girl in there somewhere. If you've reviewed the film before, that's fine- but you must retrofit your review with a link to FG to be included in my round-up.
  2. Email your link to me at stacieponder at gmail dot com. Put 'film club' or some such in the subject line.
  3. Bask in the warm, glowing, warming glow of Film Club Day. Easy, breezy, et cetera et cetera.

  1. Sweet. This is the first film club movie that I'll review that I hadn't seen before. The Netflix instant watch is getting out of control with the rare movies they keep adding, including stuff that was never even released on VHS, much less DVD.

My word verification is "spolsh", which happens to be the sound that one hears when I smack somebody in the head with a handful of jello.

  2. There's a lot of 'good' made for TV movies from the 70s on netflix - if you go to 'the babysitter' there's a picture of Alicia Silverstone, but if you watch it the version is totally different, it's a made for TV 70s movie with the same murky color scheme as SARAH, and William Shatner as the seduced upper class dad!

Brooke Shields was the 'it' girl back then, thanks to the huge scandal/success of Blue Lagoon, Pretty Baby, and Endless Love. The girl in this Babysitter is a Shields-esque flava name of Stephanie Zimbalist. Patty Duke is the drunken mom - or is it the other way around?

  3. Sign me up. Especially if it's as good as the Morgan Fairchild movie Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge.

And I pledge this probably won't be like the time I watched the Film Club Movie Amityville II: The Possession, took notes and then never did anything about it.

  4. I'm astonished to find that this one was aleady waiting in my Instant Queue. I don't remember adding it, but then I sometimes go on insomniac benders of queue-stocking and in the morning don't remember what I added. Stuck-up sorority sisters and telekinesis sounds like a lovely blend.

  5. Well count me in, I hope. I will try to have a review in by the 29th.

Dang Honeymoon, getting in the way of my hobbies.

  6. I too have mad love for both horror films and MORGAN EFFING FAIRCHILD! If only she could have been in every 70's/early 80's slasher/supernatural scary movie, this world would be a better place.

  7. Yeah, whatever deal Netflix has with a streaming service to provide rare movies, they need to keep it.

    Recent additions include:
Ator 4, Demons 6: The Black Cat, Contamination .7 (aka Troll 3), The Devil Inside Her and more.

  8. Speaking of Kay Lenz, did anyone else see her on The Closer? She's obviously had some (bad) plastic surgery done and now looks like she's had a Smilex facial. Eek!

  9. I didn't think that Shatner "Babysitter" movie was that old, but I guess it is. It still turns up on Lifetime. Patty Duke's always a deal-killer AFAIC, and yes, she's always the drunken mom.

  10. @Dementia13

THE BABYSITTER was released in 1980, but close enough. The ultimate drunken mom Patty Duke performance is in PLEASE DON'T HIT ME MOM!, which consists solely of Patty drinking and smacking her son in the head, who is played by her real life son Sean Astin. It's a big pile of kid bashing goodness.

  11. Wow, I can actually participate in this one. It's so funny that Netflix just put this up because I've been wanting to re-visit it and the other day I was looking at my TVM shelves -- of which I have several -- and there was a copy! In a big clamsheel no less. How did I NOT know I had this movie?!? So I put it on and it's still amazing! YAY!

  12. The 2006 remake sounds far less interesting even though it is the same plot...anyone seen both?

  13. Ah, the elusive "Double Morgan!" It's like one of Stacie's fashion doll movies come to life. I may have to start a blog just to participate in this month's Film Club.

Amanda, I was going to email you to see if you were going to join in this time...it's an AbN joint, for sure.

  16. I love this movie, and, to this day, I'm still freaked out by what happens to Morgan Fairchild.
