I always thought that was some cool artwork for the film. And it actually fits really well. So the book is the original, is that what I'm meant to believe? Quite surely. Or not?
Cool though. I'm still partial to the variant with the box cutter thought.
@Eric- I have no idea about any of it, which came first, what the source art piece actually is, etc. Think I'll get out my oversized magnifying glass and do some detecting work tomorrow!
Yessss. I was always hoping I'd run into that paperback because I love the novel and the artwork. Found a pristine copy at Salvation Army a few weeks ago. I was very happy!
Not as fun but I noticed the same woman (in a bra) on the posters for Tim "Robot Holocaust" Kincaid's The Female Response and Ken "Shockwaves" Wiederhorn's King Frat.

Take it from an old guy that a paperback costing 60 cents predates the circa-1978 locandia by a long stretch. The artist of the cover for the Jackson novel is William Teason, who did covers for a lot of mystery novels back in the 40s and 50s.

And yes, the book came first. That version was printed in 1963.
