SHOCKtober: The Week to Come

I'm not entirely sure anyone is still playing along, but once upon a time people asked that I post the movies in advance. Listen, I get it if people split. SHOCKtober is not for the weak. It is a true endurance test, especially this year because Netflix is mostly garbage. I swear, it's as if they knew what I had planned and purged all the good stuff (and 99% of the movies made before 2012) on October 1st. But no matter–we soldier on. Not only to the end of the month, but to the grave! Time, she is a cruel mistress. As are bad horror movies. Here's hoping we (or I) will avoid any real stinkbombs this week (*gives V/H/S 2 a side eye*):

Monday 10/12 - [REC] 3 (2012)
Tuesday 10/13 - [REC] 4 (2014)
Wednesday 10/14 - THE VAMPIRE'S COFFIN (1958)
Thursday 10/15 - THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS (2013)
Friday 10/16 - DEAD SNOW (2009)
Saturday 10/17 - JUG FACE (2013)
Sunday 10/18 - V/H/S 2 (2013)

SHOCKtober keeps on keepin' on!

Jug Face and VHS 2 are pretty great.

The first V/H/S was a chore to watch, I thought, so I never bothered with V/H/S 2. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on STRANGE COLOR. I liked it, generally, but it's super weird.

I got through maybe ten minutes of V/H/S before I thought, hmm, I'd rather do anything else than watch this. But I've heard the second one is better, so maybe...? And I'm looking forward to Strange Color... for sure, it's been on my radar forever.

I'd love to see AMER, by the same duo who made STRANGE COLOR, but it's hard to find on streaming. Netflix doesn't have it, presumably to make more room for crappy horror movies with Photoshopped posters.

You will not be disappointed in V/H/S 2. Well, maybe parts of it. But there is one story that is an all-timer. You'll know the one I'm talking about. You'll just know.

I'm sorry if I'm making this comment twice (I had a 404 error when I tried to submit, but maybe you just rejected it), but you should consider getting a free trial to Shudder, AMC's horror streaming service. It actually has some really decent (and older!) horror flicks. Anyways, I couldn't even make it past the first 20 minutes of the first VHS, so good luck to you with part two.

Oh man, they've got a pretty good selection! A lot of that stuff was on Netflix in the not-too-distant past...I get the concept of contracts and all that, it just seems like Netflix is really at a low point in terms of horror right now. It sucks!

If I had a Roku (or some way to watch Shudder beyond my desktop computer) I'd probably go for it. Ugh, FLOPtober more like.

Miskatonic is right. There is one segment in VHS 2 that is amazing. Another one that is pretty good, and the rest is meh. big fan of the REC films, curious to see your thoughts on the third installment. Jugface and Dead Snow were fun. Great list.

I once saw Bruce Springsteen in Hyde Park, London with a friend who hated him and just came along for the drinking beforehand. He stood there sighing and rolling his eyes, surrounded by 1000s of cheering, adoring fans. If you flip that around then that was my experience of watching The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears at a festival screening. I loved everything about it barring the escalating and inescapable awareness that everyone around me was fixing to track down the filmmakers and kill them with fire. It's gorgeous but you should absolutely abandon any expectation that it will make a lick of sense.

On that list I kind of like REC3 and Dead Snow is mildly amusing. VHS2 is also quite enjoyable and I have a special interest in any films with a mixed-media component.

My free Netflix UK month - horror films watched - nada. Instead I've watched Serpico, Rififi and Miss Violence, which is more depressing and horrorific than any horror film I've watched this year.

I really liked [Rec]3 and Jug Face both; the former is fun and breaks the series mold a bit and the latter is a weird, slightly icky rural horror story that I thought was pretty interesting.

Dead Snow is really terrible though. Didn't like it at all.

Wasn't Amer basically a giallo? I think that's the impression I got from reading, like, three sentences about it. I assumed Strange Color would be the same sort of Italian-esque "it's pretty but don't try to think about it" kind of experience. Which I'm definitely down for!

That VHS 2 segment! Such hype that has to live up to now for you, Stacie.

I liked Amer, but there wasn't any plot as far as I can remember. But very pretty and a great giallo mood piece. Not that giallos are know for their jam-packed plots, but still.

I haven't been in the mood for a "mood piece" forever though so I haven't seen The Strange Body of Your Tear-Colored Eyes.

[REC]3 kind of soured me on the series so I haven't seen Apocalypse yet, but perhaps the time is now! I have the day off tomorrow, so why the hell not.

I hear you regarding NetFlix paltry horror selection this year. I usually try to woof down as many pre-90's flicks as possible during October but the picking are slim right now. I too have Strange Color and Vampire's Coffin on my NetFlix List, so I'll be looking for your take. Also, they just added the Brainiac - if you haven't seen it before, it's a stone cold classic in the "what the hell am I watching" camp; the later at night you watch it, the better.
And I second the comments re: V/H/S 2 - there's one story in particular that is just a stunner IMO. As for the rest, well...

Oh, and you can always check out Channel B's selection. They have some gems buried in there, and it's all free.

Stacie,

I'm super glad you post your movies in advance. I've just been picking my movies for the month on a night by night basis, but I've been trying to work in some of the picks you made--mostly the ones I haven't seen myself.

Netflix Canada has also gone and purged a bunch of horror movies I was planning on watching. But, it seems to have a master collection of Better-Than-You'd-Think films I can recommend. 'The Pact' (don't touch 'The Pact 2', it's garbage) and 'The Canal' are both movies I found that have a great atmosphere almost throughout (with some awkward Skype or cell phone moments, which may just be me not being a fan of the video conferencing trope in horror movies), even if the plot of either wasn't anything special. And a surprising creature feature: 'Grabbers'. The concept of creatures from another world that attack a remote Irish island and are fended off by getting absolutely piss drunk is actually pretty great.

Outside of Netflix though, I'd like to recommend that you definitely check out 'Botched'. Without giving too much away, it only starts out as a heist movie. It's a fantastic flick.

Also, your blog is great. Thanks for never stopping.

-Drew

Thanks, Drew! I've seen The Pact and yeah, it was way better than expected. Sorry to hear the sequel stinks, but you're not the first person I've heard say that, so I think I'll leave well enough alone...

Everyone couldn't sit through V/H/S but y'all could tolerate Unfriended? My world is upside-down...

Stacie Ponder said...

Granted I gave up on V/H/S quite early, but I just couldn't hang with more fucking "bro horror", which Unfriended certainly isn't, if you want to compare the two. I don't think Unfriended was great by any means, but I thought it was a decent blend of slasher flicks and Asian horror approached in a novel way. Could have done without the last minute, mind.

Wait! I just realized. I don't see a review or plans for a review for Housebound. Oh man Housebound. Housebound, housebound, housebound! Please let it be Housebound.

Seriously. Housebound.
