SHOCKtober: The Week to Come

Chug chug chug along, that is what we do here even though V/H/S 2 made us want to throw ourselves into The Void. Hooray movies!

Monday 10/19 - THE CANAL (2014)
Tuesday 10/20 - STONEHEARST ASYLUM (2014) (wtf this is a Brad Anderson movie!)
Wednesday 10/21 - BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (2012)
Thursday 10/22 - WE ARE WHAT WE ARE (2013)
Friday 10/23 - INFINI (2015) (yeah space horror)
Saturday 10/24 - HOUSEBOUND (2014)
Sunday 10/25 - THE BRAINIAC (1962)

Et voilĂ ! We are so close to the end now, I hope we get to finish strong. I'm not gonna lie, there is a part of me that wants to cheat and break the "I haven't seen it before" rule and watch stuff I know I like but I've yet to review. Which part of my brain will win this moral battle? Only time will tell!

  1. You will be surprised how well you like The Canal, despite it's crummy box art.
    You will admire parts of Stonehearst Asylum but will be ultimately be bored.
    You will admire parts of Berberian Sound Studio. You will love Toby Jones. You will be reminded of some great Giallo. You will also watch the film disappear right up it's own asshole (not really, because that would be more entertaining to watch).
    You will like We Are What We Are so much you will seek out the Mexican version which preceded it. You will also like it, but not as much as this.
    You will remind me that I have yet to see Infini.
    You will add Housebound to you shortlist of greatest horror comedies. You will also celebrate the non-Photoshopped box art.
    You will remind me I have yet to see The Brainiac.

    These are predictions based solely upon my experience with these films. I completely failed to take your taste into consideration.

  2. Like The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears I saw Berberian Sound Studio at festival. It was kind of trailed as a giallo (or at least an homage). This led to a lot of confusion and shifting in seats during the screening. I like it but it benefits a lot more if you are aware of the production environment of commercial cinema in Italy in the 70s, than a love of giallo per se. It's definitely an art movie, rather than a thriller, which is probably not surprising for people familiar with Strickland's other work (which I wasn't at the time).

    Haven't seen anything else on that list but some look intriguing. Are you purposefully trying to avoid US films? - only one is We Are... and that's a remake of a Mexican film!

  3. I liked BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO a lot, but be prepared for a very STRANGE COLORS OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS approach to logic and linear narrative. That's part of what makes these films special, of course, but it can also be frustrating.

  4. @ Eliot - I'm not purposely trying to avoid US films, I swear! This is just the way it shook out this week. I'm only trying to choose movies that interest me, I've heard good things about, or might not be garbage. I'm sure it's just a coincidence they're all foreign :P

  5. I loved Housebound. It's one of those horror movies that somehow makes you feel good at the end.
