Adjust your tracking...

...and gird your loins, my friends, for on Monday begins...

It's true! I found a bunch of tapes in a box in a closet and what good are they if they are not getting in my eyeballs ASAP? None, no good at all, that's what I say. So now we will all be treated–"treated"–to a whopping 14 days of VHS delights and garbage.

"14 days," you say. "Does she not know how many days constitute a week? Has she never heard of a fortnight? Does she not know how to add?"

The answer to all of those questions is NO, but that's beside the point. The point is, come Monday I'm gonna VHS until my brain melts. If you've got any interest in what I'll be writin' 'bout when–assuming, you know, all the tapes work–here's the schedule. Add it to your Palm Pilot so you don't miss a hot minute!

Mon 5/2 - INCUBUS (1966, Leslie Stevens)
Tues 5/3 - THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932, James Whale)
Wed 5/4 - MIKEY (1992, Dennis Dimster)
Thur 5/5 - ANGUISH (1987, Bigas Luna)
Fri 5/6 - THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970, Dario Argento)
Sat 5/7 - THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1971, Peter Duffell)
Sun 5/8 - RABID (1977, David Cronenberg)
Mon 5/9 - THE GRANNY (1995, Luca Bercovici)
Tues 5/10 - PARASITE (1982, Charles Band)
Wed 5/11 - DIE! DIE! MY DARLING! (1965, Silvio Narizzano)
Thur 5/12 - THE HAUNTING OF JULIA (1977, Richard Loncraine)
Fri 5/13 - THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE (1971, Emilio Miraglia)
Sat 5/14 - THE ATTIC (1980, George Edwards & Gary Graver)
Sun 5/15 - MARTIN (1977, George A. Romero)

Why, there's some good, classic stuff in the list that I can't wait to watch. Yes, I'm talking about Mikey. It stars Josie Bissett of television's Melrose Place, of course I'm excited about it. Hmm, now that I think about it, I should just do 14 days of Mikey!

I wanted to see that SO BAD when I was younger, wandering through the horror section.

  3. Should be fun! I may wander down to the actual video store to see if I can pick up any of these, also to see if the video store is still in business.

  4. Mikey is genuinely well good.

It's so weird that you Americans don't use the word "fortnight". But if you'd rather say "14 days", then go right ahead.

  9. If any movie deserved to be picked up, cleaned off and giving a decent home video release it's THE HAUNTING OF JULIA.

Such an under-rated movie. Shout Factory or Arrow Video should get on that one.

  10. No joke! I thought it was one of those films quietly revered by horror fans...why is it so neglected??

  11. Who knows what the rights issue may be with that movie?

Or maybe we're just smarter and have better taste than everyone else.

It doesn't even show up on those corny "the best horror movies you've never seen" kind of lists, which surprises me. I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS CRUEL WORLD

  13. It may be counter to the low-fi nature of VHS Week but (no spoilers) Anguish really benefits from surround-sound, in a really interesting way.

I love Evelyn - though I think it may be primarily the superb color scheme, so hopefully that survives on VHS. The lead actress' overbite is also highly amusing.

  14. I'm definitely doing a disservice to some of these by watching them for the first time on VHS. I'll try to bear it in mindwhen I bring down my hammer of judgment!

  15. Wow! You've never sen The Haunting of Julia, Stacie? A lost classic for real! You will lurv ! If ony a good copy would be remastered for DvD it deserves the treatment if anything does...it's beautifully shot with an eerie soundtrack too!

  16. I've seen it a couple of times, but I've never really written about it so I figured why not include it. About 80% of these movies are brand new for me, though, should be a good event!

  17. Oh ok then, that makes more sense. lol I can't understand why there isn't any other good version besides the vhs ...luckily I scored a copy of the tape years back. For a while there it was on Netflix in a clear copy from some unknown source, so I know they could make a DvD if we start a write in campaign -to someone. Sigh. I just love it so much...sob sob. It has the exact same creep factor for me that Don't Look Now conjures-and that's saying' something!
