A Wee Streaming Guide for These Troubled Times

Things sure feel weird right about now, don't they? I don't know about you, but I'm vacillating between It's just temporarily different! Everything will be fine! I'm feelin' good and I'm gonna get stuff done and I'm gonna watch all the movies and read all the books! and being completely consumed by a vague, existential dread/anxiety that leaves me unable to do much of anything. Oh well. We will all get through this together, by which I mean sealed away alone inside of our own homes. I used to pine for a real swamp hag cave or cottage, but now I'm thinking I'll end up in a big swamp hag hamster ball, rollin' around safe from germs, just cackling away. Something to look forward to!

But for now, we're all living that shut-in life. A kind Gaylords of Darkness listener wrote and asked if Anthony and I have any streaming horror movie recommendations for all of us in This Time of Plague. We sure do! And we've gone and made lists of 'em. This is not completely comprehensive, of course, but it ain't a bad place to start. Most subgenres are covered. There are classics that perhaps you haven't seen in a while and there's some you might not have seen yet. If you're looking for a particular film, I highly suggest checking JustWatch. It's a streaming service database that will tell you everywhere a film is streaming, whether for free or for rental. Oh! And also, Shudder is currently offering a 30 day free trial, if you use the code SHUTIN. I love Shudder.

Now how about some recommendations? Some of these we've discussed or mentioned on the show, some I've talked about here, and some we just enjoy.

Check out Pure on Hulu. It's gross and gorgeous and empowering in all the best ways.

It looks like They're Watching got dropped from Netflix, but it was a total riot - basically, if one of those HGTV house-hunters shows was a found footage horror movie, but with a final 20 minutes so bonkers I can't even describe it.

Loving these recs, gang! Some stuff I've been meaning to check out (GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR!), some stuff I love (THEY'RE WATCHING), some stuff I would have recommended if I saw it was streaming (THE HANDMAIDEN) and more, bless us every one.

Great list, and episodes of GLOD really help pass the time!
I’d love to shout out two free streaming services that have some great horror content: Tubi TV and Pluto TV.
Tubi has some great cheesy classics like The Initiation, with queen researcher Heidi, and several other slashers.
Pluto acts more like cable and has several channels that stream horror 24/7 and a full MST3K channel if that’s your thing.
Happy watching everyone, stay safe!

Tubi is surprisingly good! Recently I’ve watched INTRUDER, THE SLAYER, and DOOM ASYLUM (not sure why they’re not showing up on JustWatch, but all 3 are still there). Also if your local library subscribes and you have a library card, you can watch a limited # of movies a month for free on Kanopy and/or Hoopla. Right now Hoopla has THE SENTINEL and Kanopy has KNIFE + HEART among others

PYEWACKET! From what the internet tells me it's available on Hulu and Prime in the States.

Yaaaaah! That’s on the Hulu chunk o list but I didn’t list it for Amazon. Good to know it’s on both!

I just watched THE EYES OF MY MOTHER on Netflix. Distrubing.

I feel like these suggestions should be more sadistic. As such, I note that both Night of the Comet and The Quiet Earth are on Shudder. Also, Day of the Dead and Rabid are on Kanopy (which is a streaming service, if you don't know, that you may get through your public library).

New series from Sweden showing on Netflix: Bloodline. Anthology stories.

Eibmoz: EYES OF MY MOTHER was one of those few movies where I actually said aloud: "Oh, that's fucked up..."

PIERCING, from the same director, is terrific. Giallo meets Takashi Miike.

I recently discovered Tubi.tv and there is a ton of horror goodness in there as well!

Tubi also had the original Suspiria - hope it's still there!

Speaking of things we need in these troubled times.... Has Gaylords of D done Drive Angry? If not, please??

Stacie Ponder said...

We've mentioned DRIVE ANGRY on the show but never done a full episode on it (although it's on the never-ending list of films to cover). We both love it!

I watched Carpenter's Body Bags on Amazon Prime a couple nights ago. I had never seen it and thought it was fun, if just for the Stacey Keach/Sheena Easton pairing.

do you have a tip jar for Gaylords? Just got my stimulus check.

Stacie Ponder said...

@Tim_W_Burke - I replied to your comment but now I don't see it here, so I am replying again! That is a very kind (and not-at-all-necessary) thought on your part! There is a tip jar at the very bottom of the Gaylords home page (gaylordsofdarkness dot com), amongst the links to our other pages. Thank you so much for thinking of us! Stay safe!

I don't know how to tell you this but Summer of Fear is currently free on Amazon Prime.
