SHOCKtober: 364-337

SPOILER ALERT today is the last days of, shall we say, the full twosies. I will miss the sort of platonic horror nerd "missed connections" vibe of the last few days, but if there's one thing we should all know by now, it's that SHOCKtober marches ever onward. This is a countdown, after all, not a countstayinoneplace or whatever. So please, enjoy this last list chunk that solely comprises films that received two votes each, for tomorrow will soon be here. • I am so into The House by the Cemetery, it's my favorite Fulci film. It's got his patented grossness and some genuine chills. It's got a New England gothic haunted house vibe that speaks to who I am and everything I love. And most importantly, it's got Bob. HAHA just kidding Bob BOB? BOB! BOB BOB BOB is too much but even BOB cannot dampen my feelings for this film!
  • LOVE to see two Charles B. Pierce movies represented! I just picked up The Evictors which is a new one for me but Pierce + Jessica Harper means I'm sure to dig it.
  • Surely I don't need to reiterate how much I love The Convent, but I would like to point out that it is somehow more than 20 years old???? I feel like that makes me somehow more than 120 years old????
  • The Haunting of Julia is such a GD beautiful, atmospheric downer and more people would know that IF IT EVER GOT SOME KIND OF POST-VHS RELEASE
  • Speaking of beautiful, atmospheric films, if you love art and dread then you should check out The House with Laughing Windows ASAP. Criminally underseen. CRIMINALLY I SAY

  1. Hats off to the two beautiful souls who picked Haunting of Julie/Full Circle. Yet another amazing movie I forgot about. It just gets better every time I see it, and I agree, WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE RE-RELEASE IT. The score by Colin Towne is so beautiful it actually hurts.

  2. The House with Laughing Windows has been on my to-watch list for a good while now. Perhaps this SHOCKtober it's finally time to remove it.

And to those lovely folks who also voted for Ghost Story and The Pact, I say: <3

  5. I thought the Void was very economical — it pared the cast down to minimal numbers and character qualities and just went for it. The weirD pregnancy stuff at the end was... well, whatever... but they did a lot with a minimal budget.

  6. The Haunting of Julia became an instant favorite after finally tracking down a copy. So formative for so many ghostie movies that followed. Yes to some sort of DVD/blu-ray release stat!

  7. Someone else liked The Endless! I've been so pleased with the work these two are doing.

  8. THE ENDLESS is even better after you see RESOLUTION.

  9. I almost voted the Devil Rides Out. I finally saw it thanks to Scarecrow Video. It's only flaw is that there is no scene in which a character says to Christopher Lee's character, "Heavens, Man! What the Devil are you talking about?" and Lee's character responds, "The Devil is exactly what we are talking about, Mr. Eaton." Probably while fiddling with a clock or something on a mantel.

  11. Finished The House with Laughing Windows and it's really terrific, one of the best Atmosphere Thick With Doom films I've seen since Messiah of Evil. Plus: as much as I sort of love bad dubbing it was kind of nice that this one was all in nice subtitles.
