awesome movie poster friday- the MARIO BAVA edition PART 2!
And, hey, I once fired a Beretta Model 12 like Diabolik's got in that last poster. I guess that makes me cheesy in retrospect.
So was the band Black Sabbath named for the Bava movie?
Silly me, typing a question before checking Wikipedia. As Signor Bava would have said, ma certo!
A movie theater across the street from the band's rehearsal room was showing the 1963 Boris Karloff horror film Black Sabbath. While watching people line up to see the film, Osbourne noted that it was "strange that people spend so much money to see scary movies".[8] Butler wrote a song titled "Black Sabbath" after reading a book by occult writer Dennis Wheatley, and seeing a black-hooded figure standing at the foot of his bed.[9] Making use of the musical tritone, also known as "The Devil's Interval", the song's ominous sound and dark lyrics pushed the band in a darker direction, a stark contrast to the popular music of the late 1960s, which was dominated by flower power, folk music, and hippie culture. Inspired by the new sound, the band changed their name to Black Sabbath in August 1969, and made the decision to focus writing similar material, in an attempt to create the musical equivalent of horror films.
*Hatchet For The Honeymoon* is my favorite this week. But I can't decide if the reflection in the cleaver is the victim's or the killer's... either way, still awesome.
But I wish I could make those *Danger : Diabolik* prints into a comforter for my bed. Damn, those are cool.
p.s. Has anyone seen Bava's *Bay of Blood*? Ugh... I think it was 80 minutes long but it felt like 4 days. I really hate that movie.
Holy Voorhees, this is most definitely my new favorite quote:
"When you chop Aim well! Don't Slip! And just make sure She doesn't drip! "
And, I have to agree with the What movie title being too great for words. Maybe What, It, and Thing can all get together to do each other's hair and makeup. I know I'd be so in.
Bay of Blood kicks unholy arse. Every Bava Ive seen has, actually. Blood and Black Lace is the best though. Why don't they make movies anymore whose entire purpose is to splash neon red paint on giant bras anymore? Im confused.
That 'looking through the knot hole' image from the top poster is eerily similar to a very old cover for Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle".
'Bay of Blood' is not a great movie, but it's really interesting. Not only for the often commented influence on 'Friday the 13th', but also for its almost experimental nature. That's why I like the AKA (one of its many) of 'Reazione a Catena' (Chain reaction), because it's almost meta-linguistical.
That said, my favourite Bava movie is 'Black Sabbath'. The old lady (well mostly a doll) of the last segment really stayed in my nightmares when I was a kid.
Loved "Danger: Diabolik" even if the only time I watched was on MST3K.
And it was a pretty fun inspiration for the Beastie Boys video "Body Movin'".
But, I will admit that the passing of its star, John Phillip Law, this week has left me sad. If I had a time machine, I'd go back in time just to meet him. RIP, my angel. :(
Wow, I say you at BWB and wow, that just made my day. :D Now I'm finally interested and not so very afriad of horror movies any more. (Or at least the one's that Ghostella presents, lol). Have never appreciated horror movies, very much, but now I've become curious in a good way, and that have very much indeed inspirered my writing.. :D thank you!!! :)

Yes! The House of Exorcism!
Telly Savalas, Elke Sommer, Robert Alda - together again for the first time!
Savalas in the Sommer Alda make for a great flick!
"What" is the greatest movie title of the world.
I think my favorite is WHA†.

Thanks for adding some Danger: Diabolik posters to the mix. I rewatched that movie (and Barbarella) after hearing that John Phillip Law passed away.
Love the posters. Are you getting some of these from the giant Bava book?
I agree with Craig. "What" is a great movie title.
I love SHOCK both those posters are great but the second one with the swing is too cool for words.

Great posters - very mod!

Perhaps it's (ahem) an 'homage'...
Film geek trivia!
One of the trailers for WHAT was the inspiration for Edgar Wright's great fake trailer "DON'T" in GRINDHOUSE.
There's way too much crap in my brain.

What? No comment of what you thought of "THe Strangers"?

Great selection of posters. Particularly like the Kill Baby, Kill! posters. One of the best spookers ever, I'd say.
